January Student Assembly Highlights

Our first student assembly of 2024 took place this morning at The Church of the Redeemer. Led by our talented RDS Prefects, students and staff celebrated community, student achievements and initiatives, and RDS House Spirit.

Clara and Tofino from Grade 3 opened the assembly by sharing the Grade 3’s Class Land Acknowledgement, and the RDS Prefects followed with an acknowledgement of culturally significant days in the month of January.

Mr. Reid introduced our new Head of School (for the day) Allie from Grade 7. As Head of School, Allie initiated a school-wide canned food drive in support of the Daily Bread Food Bank, and revealed our brand new Gryphon costume! Thanks to our generous parent community who made this purchase possible through fundraising during the 2022/23 school year.

Up next was the Grade 2 Class, who impressed with a beautiful performance of the European National Anthem sung in French. The Middle School Service Learning Committee were next to present and introduced a fundraiser benefiting the Canadian Cancer Society - allowing students to wear casual clothes on Wednesday, February 14th with a minimum donation of a toonie.

There were also plenty of achievements to recognize and celebrate too! Ms. Scharer shared this month’s Kindness Kudo recipients: Lilah C. (nominated by Grace L.), Laura L. (nominated by Dagny S.), Graham M. (nominated by Finley W.), and Ms. Shier (nominated by Lilah C. & Grace L.). A special mention to the following students who were also nominated for Kindness Kudos in the month of January: Akshita P., Alexandra C., Amida G., Ava S., Dagny S., Diana T., Lara R., Lily G., Maeve M., Mia M., Parker C., and Talia C.

We also celebrated and recognized Alexander in JK and Raya in Grade 1 as Gryphons of the Month, and The Golden Broom for the Cleanest Room, was awarded to the Grade 8 Class.

Other highlights included an energetic balloon battle challenge between RDS House Teams, a celebration of our Swim Team Duel in the Pool, and exuberant singing of Happy Birthday to those Gryphons born in the month of January. As per tradition, assembly came to a close with the RDS Cheer.
